Elias Ahonen

Biography: 

Elias Ahonen is a Finnish-Canadian blockchain and legal expert described as “one of the first Bitcoin historians” in 2016 for his ethnographic book Physical Bitcoins, which was followed by Blockland (2020). His doctoral research at the University of Turku Law School concerns the intersection of blockchain, cryptocurrency, NFT’s, DAOs, and the metaverse with international law. A columnist for Cointelegraph, his expertise is acknowledged by international media including The Wall Street Journal. Involved in the industry since 2013, he launched consulting firm Token Valley in 2017 and is a Director for Roqqu, a cryptocurrency exchange with 1.5 million users.

DAO’s and the uncertain future of taxation in the metaverse

 

 

Presentation abstract:

Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) are a new mode of organization within the blockchain arena. From the perspective of jurisdiction and taxation, how can these new forms of organizations be made sense of and categorized? Further, we will discuss other related challenges and questions regarding the taxation and valuation of blockchain and DAO-linked assets like metaverse real estate and various categories of NFT’s from a European perspective.
